Do you think WAAC should amend it's rules of governance so that the role of "Positive Rep on the Board" can be changed from being an unelected "appointment for life" into an Elected Role, with the requirement to engage with the HIV Community?

A Letter to the Editor RE the NAPWA Forum, July 2012 from The Most Blessed Vexatious Mother Gretta Amyletta of the Holy Vapours from the Perth Sisters of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence. Fagmedia understands the Sisters are currently Acting as the Peak Body representing positive people in Western Australia.
Dear NAPWA
I was unable to attend the NAPWA Forum held in Perth on the 2/6/12 due to family commitments.
I have spoken to several people who did attend and there seems to still be confusion about why NAPWA came to WA and about NAPWA as an organisation by People in the community.
Before the next meeting is held by NAPWA, which I will be attending, is it possible that NAPWA make it clear to Positive People what the meeting is about i.e. to look at setting up a peak body in WA which will send Reps to NAWPA meetings and act for Positive People in WA.
NAPWA is not and never has been an organisation that has social groups as full members or as a peak body's. This still seems to be what I have been told is
confusing some Positive People who attended the meeting.
Because HAPAN was allowed to develop into a social support group while remaining as NAPWA's Peak Body for WA there seems to be a perception that this is what the goals of NAPWA are, and why NAPWA is coming to WA and what holding these meeting are all about.
Before NAPWA holds it's next meeting could NAPWA approach WAAC to hold separate meeting/forums to address the support needs that were raised by some people in regards to setting up social groups and peer based support groups like a Planet Positive or Lunch/dinner club etc which is what some positive people were asking for at the first meeting.
This is an important issue for people but is not the role of NAPWA to address WAAC would be a much better in dealing with issue for the community.
This must have been apparent to NAPWA by the comments made by people at the meeting from what I have been told people who attended.
Separating the two distinctly different issues is needed. This will allow NAPWA to gauge the real amount of interest there is in setting up a member organisation from WA to provide reps to NAPWA and under what type of model needed by NAPWA.
It is not the role of NAPWA to be holding meetings to set up social groups for individual states. A seperate forum held by WAAC will help separate these two issues which seem to have become come blurred for some people as a result of HAPAN's role (as a support group rather than peak body) and still being allowed to continue in the community in WA for so long as NAPWA's Peak Body.
Could NAPWA please place some printed information to be available to people in WA about what NAPWA role is does and asking the community to your meetings perhaps something in OUT In Perth, along with the goals of these meetings that NAPWA are asking people to attend to discuss and achieve outcomes.
Information about NAPWA and why it is coming to WA in a mail out using WAAC's Data Base to people might be a good to separate these two issue for some people.
I was not able to attend the meeting but will attend the next one. I just don't want to be attending a meeting that is expecting positive people in WA to consider two very separate issues at the same time.
I do understand that this is the beginning of this process but it does perhaps need to made a bit clear to why NAPWA has come to WA. WAAC could help this process by holding forums/meetings to address the issue social networking for Positive people.
Thank you and I hope you consider my suggestion.
Regards
THE MOST BLESSED VEXATIOUS MOTHER GRETTA AMYLLETTA OF THE HOLY VAPOURS.

Note from the Editor:
Thank you to Mother Gretta for this letter which raises valid points about the NAPWA's process in WA. In terms of education strategy Fagmedia is baffled by the continuing practice of NAPWA, which is to send people to Perth for meetings empty handed. Is it any wonder that positive people in Perth never seem to be able to understand even the basics about who NAPWA is given that every time "they" speak they do so "off the cuff or off the top of their heads" and never provide any take home print materials to reinforce the "learning giving in class"! Any Teacher will attest that notes and other printed information adds value to the learning by reinforcing and enhancing verbal information provided in "formal" presentations.
