Introduction to the survey research

Fagmedia was asked by the Perth Sisters of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence to use their resources and expertise to conduct a survey in regards to the Perth Pride Parade 2014.

The Sisters concern is that decisions related to the future timing and focus of Perth's Pride Festival must include the needs of the broader LGBTIQ Community, and other groups who participate in Events and the Parade, without whom no festival or parade is possible.

It is clear that while the Perth Pride Parade might be "organised" by the Association many people feel a strong sense that the Parade is something that is "owned" by the whole community. This small independent survey aims to compliment Pride's qualitative Review Process by providing a quantitative snapshot of the broader community opinion.

The data collection process.

The data in this Survey was collected using a Survey Monkey Measuring Instrument. This methodology use is a well established model that has been utilised in Perth by a number of funded organisations, including the WA AIDS Council, as a tool to evaluate programs and carry out needs assessments to inform service delivery.

The Survey data was collected and promoted using social media networks and community groups were sent a copy of the weblink, for distribution to their members. As an unfunded community organisation the Sisters do not have the resources to analyse, "easy to misinterpret data", that is generated from qualitative question responses, thus a decision was made to focus on the collection of quantitative data using 10 closed response Yes/No questions.

The current total number of people who have completed the survey is many more than is reported here, and while we would love to be able to provide the community with extended survey results, the reality is that the Sisters do not have the required resources available to upgrade & unlock the complete data set.

The Sisters would welcome sponsorship from a generous community minded individual or group and anyone wishing to donate the required resources should make contact through the Abbey of the Black Swan's official website here!

The percentage results presented here are thus based on Survey Monkey's limit of 100 free response data analysis service. What we do know from the data is that these percentage outcomes have been consistently the same throughout the survey and so we believe these percentages may be extrapolated to represent the complete data set.

The Sisters understand that issues relating to Pride in WA are "hotly debated" in the Community and while we recognise that the Pride Association's Survey of Members suggests that views are more evenly held, it would appear from this survey that in the broader community, attendees and participants really do want to see a fabulous and more inclusive night time parade.

The Sisters, therefore, welcome Pride's sensible decision, made after the launch of this survey, to listen to the Community and to take Perth Pride Parade back to the Night for 2014!
